Buddle Findlay aims to introduce you to “real” law as quickly as possible.  Our summer clerk programme lasts approximately 12 weeks, during which time you will rotate through 2 of the firm’s practice areas and be supervised by a partner or senior associate.  These rotations will provide you with an opportunity to obtain a close-up view of the profession at work.  As a summer clerk you will have a wide variety of work.  This may include researching and writing legal advice, drafting contracts and court documents and meeting with clients.

As a law clerk, you can rotate through 2 of the firm’s practice areas.  After your first 6 month rotation, you will be encouraged to move to another practice area to gain different legal skills and exposure to other areas of the law.  These rotations will help you decide on the area of law you wish to practise in.  Combine this on-the-job experience with the professional legal studies course, internal training and seminars, and regular feedback on how you are doing, and the first year with Buddle Findlay becomes invaluable.

Supervision

In each rotation you will be supervised by a partner and/or senior associate.  Your team leader and your supervisor will be responsible for ensuring you are provided with the appropriate amount and level of work.  Our approach is to give you as much autonomy as you can reasonably handle while ensuring that you have the necessary support to develop your legal career.

You will also be assigned a buddy for each rotation.  This is a junior or intermediate solicitor who can answer your questions – typically someone who has been a summer clerk before.
