Professional development programme
Buddle Findlay is committed to the development of well rounded solicitors who are both technically competent and possess the necessary skills and attributes to be effective in their roles. In keeping with this commitment, a comprehensive approach to solicitor development has been put in place.
The firm has adopted a competency framework that describes what is expected of solicitors at each career level of the firm. This framework not only describes what is expected of solicitors now, but also assists solicitors to understand the expectations we have of them as they move through their career in the firm. A guide to the specialist technical legal knowledge and skills that lawyers should develop at each career step is also provided.
As part of the programme solicitors devise a Personal Development Plan in which they identify their goals and objectives for the year. This follows a comprehensive annual review with their supervising partner and ensures that their development objectives are known and worked towards. The development plans are supported by a comprehensive Development Guide that provides tips and ideas, activities and projects that can be undertaken either independently or in collaboration with others, suggestions about books and articles to read, and websites to visit for each competency.
In-house training
Each year the firm runs a series of targeted in-house courses. Recent topics have included:

Regular solicitor seminars
The firm runs regular in-house seminars to keep you up to date with the latest legal developments. Team specific and specialist seminars are run and case studies and transaction briefings to help solicitors develop their working knowledge of a wide variety of client related work.
Junior solicitor seminars
The junior solicitor seminars are a programme of seminars specifically targeted at law clerks and junior solicitors. This programme has been developed to address the various practicalities of day-to-day activities that occur in working at Buddle Findlay.
External seminars and conferences
Attendance at external conferences, lectures and seminars is encouraged. Broader exposure to law and the business world is generally promoted and we facilitate this by arranging secondments with clients and assisting with overseas/local study. With a network of contacts worldwide, we're also able to facilitate overseas work experience.
