Our community priorities

Our community priorities

Te Hapori is our strategic framework to guide and support Buddle Findlay’s contribution to the community.  We are committed to building a more sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand.  After surveying our people, our committee agreed to focus on six priority areas.  These priorities guide who we partner with, where we direct our pro bono work and how our people choose to spend their Āwhinatia Rā community day.

Pro bono

Pro bono

Buddle Findlay is committed to making meaningful contributions to our communities through our pro bono programme.  We focus on work that aligns with our Te Hapori priority areas and continuously explore new relationships with people and organisations who can benefit from our legal expertise.

Pro bono statistics

  • 160 pro bono matters advised on in 2025

  • Over 2,900 hours of pro bono legal work in 2025

  • Over 570 hours of support to Community Law and Te Ara Ture in 2025.

Halberg Foundation

"The Buddle Findlay and Halberg career experience programme provided me with amazing insight into how a law firm is managed, and as a result, I’m looking to study a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Canterbury next year."

Joseph Tebbutt, Halberg Youth Council

Halberg Foundation

Buddle Findlay has been a key sponsor of the Halberg Foundation for 10 years.  The Halberg Foundation works with talented young sportspeople and their families to ensure they receive the support they need to pursue their sporting dreams.  It also collaborates with schools, sports clubs and organisations to provide training and ensure physical activities are accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.

Buddle Findlay provides the Halberg Foundation with financial assistance and legal support, and our people volunteer at the Halberg Games, a three-day annual event for young people aged 8 to 21 with physical or visual impairments.  We host Halberg Youth Council meetings, run a three-day career experience programme for Youth Council members and sponsor the annual Buddle Findlay Coach of the Year award at the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards.  The Board renewed its sponsorship in October 2025 at a higher level of financial contribution.

Buddle Findlay Child Health Foundation

Buddle Findlay Child Health Foundation

The Buddle Findlay Child Health Foundation is a charitable trust established in 2004 and funded by Buddle Findlay partners and our people.  Its focus is to support children and young people in New Zealand facing health and wellbeing challenges, including physical and mental health, disability, and family stress or crisis.  Supporting the healthcare of New Zealand’s children and young people is a natural fit for the firm, with partners and staff having a genuine desire to make a difference in a direct and tangible way.

$1.75m donated for urgent medical care, equipment and research for children and young people since the Foundation began in 2004.

VERI-Mi (Access to justice)

VERI-Mi combats migrant exploitation in New Zealand by empowering workers to understand and stand up for their rights. Buddle Findlay is a VERI-Mi partner.

Kotahi Rau Pukapuka (Māori wellbeing).

Buddle Findlay sponsors Kotahi Rau Pukapuka, supporting their goal of producing 100 great books in Te Reo Māori in printed, e-book and audiobook formats for rangatahi and adult readers.

Lifeline (Mental health and addiction)

A new partnership established in 2025.  Lifeline plays a critical role in supporting people in crisis through its free and confidential helpline and text services.  Buddle Findlay provides annual financial support.

Fair Food, Kaibosh and Kairos (Reducing inequality)

Buddle Findlay has partnered with food rescue organisations in each of our office locations: Fair Food in Auckland, Kaibosh in Wellington and Kairos in Christchurch, connecting surplus food to people and communities in need.

Āwhinatia Rā

Āwhinatia Rā is the Buddle Findlay community day. Every person at Buddle Findlay receives one additional paid day of special leave each year to spend on an activity that represents a positive contribution to the community, in whatever way works for them.
