John specialises in corporate and commercial law and in particular, commercial property. He acts on a wide range of transactions including developments and subdivisions, construction, leases and financing and security arrangements, including work for various Canterbury territorial authorities, Christchurch International Airport Limited and various private developers. As part of his property expertise, John provided property and related advice to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and now provides the same advice to Land Information New Zealand.
John also has expertise in local government, advising Christchurch City Council and other local authorities on various local government issues and transactions.
Having been an All Black and having played 100 games for Canterbury, John also has an interest in sports law.
